What is Organic?

Once upon a time you didn’t hear much about “organic”. Now it seems like every where you turn it’s organic this, that and the other!  So what is it, is it better than non-organic and, probably most importantly –  is it worth the extra money?

Probably where we hear this term the most is with regard to our food.  Organic food is one of the fastest-growing categories in the food industry.  Depending on where you are purchasing your organic food, it can cost anywhere from 50-100% more. Is it worth it?  For some foods much higher levels of pesticides are used and all the washing in the world is not going to get rid of the chemicals. Apples, berries, grapes, spinach and potatoes are going to have very high residue of pesticides and it’s worth it to buy these organic whenever possible.  Avocados, bananas, mangoes, asparagus, and onions are a few foods which are fine to eat non-organic.  Some research will tell you which to buy organic and which are fine otherwise.

What does organic mean?  That the food has not been genetically modified or irradiated, the fertilizer used does not contain sewage sludge or synthetic ingredients and that the produce has not been contaminated with synthetic chemicals such as pesticides.  Beware that “natural” does NOT mean organic.  There is no standard for the term natural, this is left up to the producer or manufacturer so it’s buyer beware!  You should also know that there are corporations out there who are completely altering our food and no one knows what the ramifications are of this on a long term basis.  It’s a good idea to learn about what you are putting in your mouth!

Even pet owners today are turning away from the over-processed, chemical ladened pet foods on the market and demanding organic ingredients.   For too long pet foods have been made up of by products and substandard ingredients which can harm a pet’s health.

Today we also have organic hair care products.  Due to the fact that what goes on the body gets in the body, this is a good alternative.  For those who eat organically it only makes sense that they might not want to take the chemicals in with hair color and hair care products.  Let’s face it, we don’t all look so great with grey hair!  With organic hair color, gone are the days of the burning scalp and watering eyes while the color is

processing.  Does it cost extra?  Yes, but some of us definitely feel it is worth it!  Does it hold?  Yes, remarkably well!

Why Mother’s Day?

I always thought Mother’s Day was created by Hallmark Cards because that’s what I’ve always heard. Imagine my surprise in finding that Mother’s Day is centuries old dating back to ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods! Then, during the 1600′s, early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. A clerical decree in England broadened the celebration to include all Mothers, referring to the day as Mothering Day. Mothering Day provided a one-day reprieve from the fasting and penance of Lent so that families across England could enjoy a family feast where Mother was the guest of honor.  Mothers were presented  cakes and flowers as well as visits from their beloved and their distant children.

The English settlers who came to America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Day either because they lived under harsh conditions and were so busy working long hours in order to survive or they thought Mothering Day conflicted with their Puritan ideals.  Centuries later, the American Mother’s Day would be invented – with an entirely new history. Julia Ward Howe came up with a Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870.  12 years prior, she had penned the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Howe was so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War, that she called on Mother’s to come together to protest what she saw as the futility of their sons killing the sons of other mothers.  Howe called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood.

While Howe’s vision of the holiday failed, she had planted the seed which would blossom into what we know as Mother’s Day today.  A young Appalachaian homemaker in 1858, named Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, was influenced by Howe’s ideas and attempted to improve sanitation through what she called “Mothers Friendship Day.”  When most women devoted their time on their family and homes, Jarvis was working to assist in the healing of the nation after the Civil War.  Ann was instrumental in saving thousands of lives by teaching women in her Mothers Friendship Clubs the basics of nursing and sanitation which she learned from her famous physican brother James Reeves, M.D.

Jarvis’s daughter, Anna Jarvis, finally succeeded in introducing Mother’s Day in the sense as we celebrate it today.  Anna was a graduate from the Female Seminary in Wheeling, taught in Grafton  for a while before moving to Philadelphia with her family.  Anna had spent many years looking after her ailing mother.  When her mother died in Philadelphia on May 9th, 1905,  Anna missed her greatly.  She had never married, preferring to remain a spinster.  Anna felt children often neglected to appreciate their mother enough while she was still alive.  Anna dedicated her life to her mother’s cause and to establish Mother’s Day to “honor mothers, living and dead.” She started a campaign to establish an national Mother’s Day. With friends, she started a letter-writing campaign to urge ministers, businessmen and congressmen in declaring a national Mother’s Day holiday.  Anna’s hope was that Mother’s Day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family bonds.

In 1912 West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother’s Day and, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.  By the time of Anna M. Jarvis’s death, over 40 countries observed Mother’s Day, and today that number exceeds 70!

So,  for those of you, like me who thought Mother’s Day was a made up Hallmark Holiday, you now know the truth and “the rest of the story”.

Reducing Stress

From time to time we are all stressed.  When it gets to be too much, it begins to take it’s toll on our health, our well-being and our relationships.  In our industry, daily we see hair loss in women (and men) as a result of stress.  It is essential that we learn what can be done to reduce stress and begin implementing some of these things into our life before it results in negative side effects.

Meditation is probably right at the top of the list when it comes to managing/eliminating stress.  The goal with mediation is to relax the body so the mind reduces worry.  The end goal is to cope with the stress by learning to manage your mind on a daily basis.

Keeping a journal can be used in several different ways to relive stress.  It’s good therapy to understand ones thoughts and feelings, by writing them down.

Breathing exercises provide convenient and simple stress relief. And, the beauty of this is that it can be used anywhere, anytime and works quickly.

Playing games either with friends or online can take your mind off your stressors and can lead to a relaxed state.  Obviously something that cannot/should not be done at work!

Laughter is a wonderful stress reliever!  The physical act of laughing releases tension and brings positive physiological changes.    Find ways to work more laughter into your day.

There as so many things which can be done to relieve stress that it would make for a very lengthy post so I will list some of the more popular ones rather than discussing each one.

Take a walk.  Exercise is a fantastic stress reducer!  Plant a garden, there is something about gardening that is soothing to the soul. Listen to music.  Upbeat when you need energy, mellow to calm you.  Eat a balanced diet.  Remember, you are what you eat!  Eat crap and you feel crappy and stressed out!

Enjoy aromatherapy.  This has proven benefits for stress relief and can help you become energized, more relaxed or more present. Learn time management skills. When you complete everything on your “to do” list, your whole life feels easier and the stress melts away.

Reduce your caffeine intake.  Consuming caffeine too late in the day can affect quality sleep which impacts your stress levels. Drink green tea both for the calming benefits and the health benefits.

One thing you don’t want to do to relieve stress is drink alcohol. Excessive drinking  as well as smoking cigarettes are an all too prevalent and dangerous way of dealing with stress in the short term.  The goal is to deal with stress in a healthy manner which can be done by many of the ways listed above!

Taking Cover from the Sun

Last week we did a blog on enjoying the sun without worrying about the damaging/aging effects     In the summer, more than ever, your skin care routine is critical!  One of the most important things you can do for your skin to prevent aging is to use sunscreen.  Obviously we are very impressed with SkinCeuticals which is why we sell it at our salon.  Our blog last week featured some of their key products for sun protection.  Some skin experts recommend a combination of physical blockers with zinc dioxide or titanium dioxide and a chemical blocker such as octyl methoxycinnamate, oxybenzone, avobenzone or octocrylene.  If you are concerned about allergic reaction, it’s recommended  that you try it on your hand or arm first, before applying on your face.

Then there are the Vitamin A creams, retinoid which are prescription or over-the-counter.  These  can really stimulate your collagen and elastin molecules underneath the skin while exfoliating off the top layer of dead skin cells as well as the brown and red spots.  Retinols should always be applied at night because the sun makes them less active.

In the morning, go for the antioxidants.  Apply a vitamin-packed antioxidant cream such as Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic or Phlorein CF.  If you require extra or additional treatments, you can supplement your routine with facials, dermabrasions and peels every other month or so.  With all this available, summer will come and go without you being the worse for it!

Let the Sun Shine In..

Spring is here and summer is on the horizon.  We LOVE summer, especially those of us who live in Minnesota!  But along with the warm/hot weather comes lots of sun which, as we all know, has a destructive, aging side to it.  Since beauty is our business –  we like to stay on the cutting edge where skin care is concerned.  We choose SkinCeuticals as we know they are pioneers in the field of antioxidant serums which have been scientifically evaluated and proven to work.  Use of a topical antioxidant product strengthens the skin’s natural defense system to decrease UV-induced free radical formation. Effective topical antioxidants neutralize the UV-induced free radicals that are not blocked by sunscreens.  By helping protect the epidermal and dermal layers from the inside, they provide the most complete photoaging protection.

What are some of the benefits of an effective topical antioxidant?

  • Effective and efficiently penetrates the skin
  • Prevents the formation of thymine dimers, sun-induced mutations responsible for skin cancer
  • Neutralizes  free radicals caused by UV exposure and other environmental aggressors
  • Prevents UV-induced collagen breakdown and boost new collagen synthesis, helping diminish the appearance of environmental damage.

While the SkinCeuticals antioxidant serum is very efficient alone, when used together with their Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50, these products provide the most comprehensive protection against UV-induced photodamage and skin cancer.

So, let’s get ready to enjoy our summer sun, while being protected by the best sun screen products the industry has to offer!

Extensions for Post-Chemo Patients

Were you aware that extensions can be used for post-chemotherapy patients?  Obviously you would want a professional who has had the proper training to provide this service.  Why?  A post-chemo patient’s hair is so fine and delicate that it will take an extra careful application to make their hair extensions work with no damage to their new hair. It also matters what type of extensions are used.  The extensions must be light weight and have a light weight bond such as the Micro Point Simplicity by Cyberhair.

There are certain bonding techniques which must be avoided as you don not ever want to damage a post chemo patient’s new incoming hair growth.  Bond types such as sticker or adhesive, I -tips and weaves must be avoided as they may cause extra stress on the natural hair, breaking and causing additional hair loss to the client’s ultra-fine hair.

A salon/studio which focuses on Women’s hair replacement would typically be the best place to for post-chemotherapy patients to go for hair extensions.  A salon specializing in extensions may not be a good choice unless they have specifically been trained to work with post- chemo hair and have the proper light weight extensions.

Do your research to find the right salon so that you can feel confident in getting hair extensions which will help restore your self image!  Fantasia Salon specializes in Women’s Hair Replacement and has trained professional who apply Simplicity Hair Extension.

Hand Made is Better!

Are you aware of all of the harmful ingredients that are being put in the things you put on your skin these days?  Just as with what you put in your mouth, you MUST read the ingredients.  Why does it matter?  Because what you put ON your skin gets IN your body!

What are handcrafted soaps?  They are made by combining oils with an alkali and water.  When these ingredients are combined they transform into soap and glycerin with no lye remaining. The reaction is called saponifcation which means “the making of soap”.  Soap cleanses the skin while the glycerin moisturizes the skin.

Glycerin is a natural by-product of the soap making process. Pound – for -pound, glycerin costs more than soap, which is why large commercial soap companies remove the glycerin from their product and sell it to manufacturers of other products.  With a good hand made soap the glycerin remains in the products.  Since glycerin is a humectant, it attracts and retains moisture in your skin.  It acts as a natural lotion in the soap.  The result of retaining the glycerin is a mild, pure soap that gently cleanses your skin without being harsh, irritating or drying.  You are getting a soap and moisturizer all in one bar!

With commercially made soaps you are typically getting detergents, fillers, chemicals, petroleum, high animal fat content and irritants.  All of the detergents, phosphates and fillers contained in these products tend to be less environmentally friendly where as the hand made soaps which only contain natural ingredients and are in harmony with the environment!  So, while commercially made soaps usually costs less – there is a price to pay when it comes to your skin and the environment!

The natural ingredients found in hand made soaps are more expensive than synthetic ingredients.  Most hand made or handcrafted soaps are made with pure, food-quality vegetable oils and nut butters, such as olive oil, coconut and palm oil as well as shea and cocoa butter.  Prices of these oils and butter fluctuate from season to season and from crop to crop.  And making soaps by hand takes time and care.  The end results in a better bar of soap.

While many customers have seen improvement in skin conditions by switching to handcrafted soaps, it would be illegal to make claims that the soaps cure anything.  See if your salon carries handcrafted soaps and you too may agree that hand made is better!

So, What is Paraffin Thermotherapy?

It sounds like some type of medical procedure or something. Well, close but not exactly.  While it is manufactured to the FDA Class  Medical Device standards, it is not a medical procedure or treatment.  However, for some it offers relief from the pain of arthritis in the hands.

So what exactly am I talking about?  Pariffin Thermotherapy is where you dip your hands into a tub of soft, warm, comforting paraffin.  What it does for you from a medical standpoint is that it provides therapeutic relief of pain due to arthritis, joint inflammation, muscle stiffness and injury.  It provides instant warmth and it increases circulation to renew tissue.  From an aesthetic or spa standpoint, it topically moisturizes the skin, plumps and hydrates to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, opens pores to detoxify and leaves the skin soft and healthy looking.

Paraffin Thermotherapy is a hand and foot treatment.

For over 90 years Paraffin Thermotherapy has been used to relieve pain, inflammation and stiffness in muscles and joints.

It is recognized by the FDA as a heat modality for arthritis pain.  The warm paraffin instantly forms a shell as it begins to cool on the skin as the treatment area (hand, foot or elbow) is immersed in the wax. This shell (or “glove”) seals in the heat generated by the effective increase in blood flow and causes perspiration.  The increase in blood flow helps to promote new tissue generation, while the perspiration trapped under the “glove” effectively moisturizes the skin from the inside out.

If you have a loved one suffering from arthritic hands (or feet) a wonderful gift would be gift certificate from the salon for Paraffin Thermotherapy. They will love the pampering and enjoy relief debilitating arthritis pain!

Hair Makes the Woman

There is nothing about you that makes a bigger statement than your hair!  You may be down in the dumps but a spectacular hairstyle can be life changing!  According to Dr. Marianne LaFrance of Yale University, there really is such a thing as a Bad Hair Day and it affects far more than just your appearance.  It impacts your performance, self-esteem, social insecurity and self-criticism!

Rest assured, we have all had bad hair days.  If you feel your hair looks bad, it will produce negative consequences that go way beyond not feeling good about the way you look.

This is not just a female phenomenon, both men and women can be negatively  affected by bad hair days. “Individuals perceive their capabilities to be significantly lower than others when experiencing bad hair, according to Dr. Marianne.

According to the doctor’s study, the perception of bad hair leads to a reduced sense of performance self-esteem, such that men and women doubt their capabilities and may ultimately perform below their level of competence!  Just the thought of a bad hair day can cause both men and women to feel they are not as smart as someone else.  Would you believe the impact on performance self-esteem was more pronounced among men then women?

This study also found that bad hair intensifies feelings of social insecurity and self-consciousness.  Reactions differed among men and women.  Men feel more nervous, less confident and are more inclined to be unsociable.  Women tend to feel more disgraced, embarrassed, ashamed or self-conscious when experiencing bad hair.

There is evidence to show that bad hair causes a person to be more negative about themselves.  It leads individuals to find more personal character flaws going beyond their appearance. When asked to complete a statement about who they are, “bad hair” caused people to mention significantly more of traits and attributes.

So, if you want to be on top of things, be loaded with confidence, be optimistic –  do whatever it takes to have good hair! Don’t cut money to maintain “good hair” out of your budget, for as you can see, it’s about far more than just hair!
